Gothic Heart Patch Cookies

Delightful cookies with a unique heart patch design, rich flavors, and customizable options, perfect for sharing on special occasions.

Ingredients

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup raspberry jam (or filling of choice)
  • Red food coloring (optional, for the dough or icing)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tbsp milk
  • Food coloring for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dough: In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. In a separate bowl, cream the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract, then gradually mix in the dry ingredients until combined.
  2. Chill the Dough: Split the dough into two discs. Wrap each disc in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This makes the dough easier to work with.
  3. Roll and Cut: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). On a floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Use a heart-shaped cookie cutter to cut out cookies. Use a smaller heart cutter to cut out the center of half of them.
  4. Fill and Bake: Transfer the solid cookie shapes to a baking sheet. Place about ½ teaspoon of raspberry jam in the center of each solid cookie, then top with the cut-out cookie hearts to create a “patch”. Press the edges to seal them. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  5. Cool and Ice: Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack. In the meantime, prepare the icing by whisking together powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Decorate the cookies with icing as desired, adding additional food coloring if you wish.

Notes

Avoid overworking the dough for tender cookies. Keep the dough cold while rolling and use high-quality ingredients for the best flavor.
