Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • Red and blue food coloring
  • Buttercream frosting
  • Black fondant (for Spiderman decoration)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans to prevent sticking.
  2. Mix the dry ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well mixed.
  3. Combine wet ingredients: Add the eggs, whole milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry mixture. Beat with a mixer on medium speed until smooth.
  4. Incorporate boiling water: Gradually stir in the boiling water until the batter is well combined. The batter will be thin but that’s normal!
  5. Divide the batter evenly into two bowls. Use red food coloring in one bowl and blue food coloring in the other, mixing until you achieve the desired colors.
  6. Pour the red batter into one prepared pan and the blue batter into the other pan.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Cool the cakes: Remove from the oven and allow the cakes to cool in the pans for about 10 minutes. Then, transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  9. Decorate once cooled: Frost the cakes with buttercream frosting. Use black fondant to create Spiderman decorations on top for a fun touch. Serve and enjoy!

Notes

Ensure room temperature ingredients for a smoother batter. Avoid overmixing and check for doneness regularly.
